Described by students as challenging but yet the most rewarding course, the PADI Rescue Diver course taught by Cozumel Dive School takes your thinking outside your own bubble and extends your awareness to the well-being of your buddy team, other divers, and the surrounding marine life. It teaches you how to recognize and prevent problems and, if necessary, to manage dive emergencies using a variety of proactive techniques. A typical schedule is spaced out over three to four days, but subject to change.

Before you arrive: You will be assigned a code to your PADI eLearning and will complete all the required knowledge reviews and exams.

Paperwork: You will also receive a set of documents that must be signed online before starting the practical part of the course: Medical Statement, Liability Release and Safe Diving Practices. In order to participate in any water activities, you must have no contraindications to scuba diving (see PADI Medical Form).

At Cozumel Dive School: Upon your arrival to the island, your instructor will brief you on your course schedule. You can find our typical schedule below, however, adjustments may be made due to the weather and instructors' availability. Be sure to read our policy about rescheduling and cancellations.

BEFORE THE RESCUE COURSE (only for EFR package): If your Rescue Diver course is bundled with an Emergency First Responder Primary & Secondary Care course, you will spend your additional day completing the first aid requirements. A practical training session, covering primary & secondary care skills, along with AED and emergency oxygen kit handling, will take half of that day.

DAY ONE: The PADI Rescue Diver course starts with the pool session where you’ll learn how to recognize and respond in emergency situations concerning you or your fellow divers, on the surface and underwater. In the afternoon you will watch PADI Rescue Diver video, and have some time to complete any missing parts of your online knowledge reviews (although we highly recommend doing it before you arrive so you can have a free afternoon and enjoy the island).

DAY TWO: On your second day of training, you’ll take the skills learned in the pool and practice them in the open ocean, allowing enough time to explore the reef in our favorite shore dive site. For your certification, you’ll be expected to prepare an Emergency Action Plan for that dive site (ask your instructor for guidelines).

DAY THREE: This is usually the most stimulating day of the course! You will take off to the shore for two rather unusual dives when, apart from enjoying the underwater world, you’ll take a lead on a mock rescue scenario with your instructor. You should be prepared to rescue distressed divers and save lives in a simulated real-life situation. After meeting the course requirements, you will be certified as a PADI Rescue Diver.
Congratulations! Your successful completion of The PADI Rescue Diver course with EFR allows you to take the first step towards becoming a PADI Professional diver and start your PADI Divemaster Internship program!
