So you received your Open Water Diver certification and your curiosity is calling for more diving? We are not surprised. Take your skills to the next level with the Advanced Open Water course taught by Cozumel Dive School!

This certification will give you a better understanding of the underwater world and will boost your confidence as a diver. After completing this course, you will be able to dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters/100 feet (or 21 meters/70 feet if you’re under 15 years old).

The Advanced Open Water course includes two mandatory dives (deep dive & navigation) along with three elective dives of your choice. Choose your own adventure! The following dives are the most popular among other Cozumel Dive School students: night, wreck, sidemount, peak performance buoyancy, drift, Dive Against Debris or fish identification. If you're interested in a cavern dive, check out our new AOWD course we offer in collaboration with Darkside Divers

Once you choose your adventure dives, next step is to decide how many boat dives you want to do - two or four boat dives? Also, your preferences for elective dives may lend themselves to a certain locale (boat vs shore dives). Ask your instructor if you'd like advice or have trouble deciding.

For the Advanced Open Water course, you have a water skills component and eLearning study. You will be expected to complete five corresponding chapters in your PADI eLearning, along with the knowledge reviews, and complete an online sign-off for the course paperwork. Upon meeting all course requirements, you will receive your Advanced Open Water Diver certification (Junior AOWD certification for those under 15 years old).

Before you arrive: You will be assigned a code to your Advanced Open Water Diver eLearning and will complete all the five required knowledge reviews. There is no final exam.

Paperwork: You will also receive a set of documents that must be signed online before starting the practical part of the course: Medical Statement, Liability Release, and Safe Diving Practices. In order to participate in any water activities, you must have no contraindications to scuba diving (see PADI Medical Form).

At Cozumel Dive School: Upon your arrival to the island, your instructor will brief you on your course schedule. You can find our typical schedule below, however, adjustments may be made due to the weather and instructors' availability. Be sure to read our policy about rescheduling and cancellations.

AOWD OPTION 1: This option includes three shore dives + two boat dives. Below is the suggested schedule:

Described by students as challenging but yet the most rewarding course, the PADI Rescue Diver course taught by Cozumel Dive School takes your thinking outside your own bubble and extends your awareness to the well-being of your buddy team, other divers, and the surrounding marine life. It teaches you how to recognize and prevent problems and, if necessary, to manage dive emergencies using a variety of proactive techniques. A typical schedule is spaced out over three to four days, but subject to change.

Before you arrive: You will be assigned a code to your PADI eLearning and will complete all the required knowledge reviews and exams.

Paperwork: You will also receive a set of documents that must be signed online before starting the practical part of the course: Medical Statement, Liability Release and Safe Diving Practices.

BEFORE THE RESCUE COURSE (only for EFR package):  If your Rescue Diver course is bundled with an Emergency First Responder Primary & Secondary Care course, you will spend your additional day completing the first aid requirements. A practical training session, covering primary & secondary care skills, along with AED and emergency oxygen kit handling, will take half of that day.

DAY ONE:  The PADI Rescue Diver course starts with the pool session where you’ll learn how to recognize and respond in emergency situations concerning you or your fellow divers, on the surface and underwater. In the afternoon you will watch PADI Rescue Diver video, and have some time to complete any missing parts of your online knowledge reviews (although we highly recommend doing it before you arrive so you can have a free afternoon and enjoy the island).

DAY TWO: On your second day of training, you’ll take the skills learned in the pool and practice them in the open ocean, allowing enough time to explore the reef in our favorite shore dive site. For your certification, you’ll be expected to prepare an Emergency Action Plan for that dive site (ask your instructor for guidelines).

DAY THREE: This is usually the most stimulating day of the course! You will take off to the shore for two rather unusual dives when, apart from enjoying the underwater world, you’ll take a lead on a mock rescue scenario with your instructor. You should be prepared to rescue distressed divers and save lives in a simulated real-life situation. After meeting the course requirements, you will be certified as a PADI Rescue Diver.

Congratulations!  Your successful completion of The PADI Rescue Diver course with EFR allows you to take the first step towards becoming a PADI Professional diver and start your PADI Divemaster Internship program!
