How to Get to Cozumel Dive School: Your Complete Travel Guide
Planning your scuba adventure with Cozumel Dive School? The good news is that getting to Cozumel is simple, whether you fly directly to the island or arrive through Cancun. Once you’re here, we’ll take care of the diving—you just need to get yourself to paradise.
Option 1: Fly Directly to Cozumel
The easiest way to reach Cozumel Dive School is by flying into Cozumel International Airport (CZM). The airport offers flights from several major cities in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, making it a convenient choice for many travelers.
After landing, you’re only a short taxi ride from downtown San Miguel, where Cozumel Dive School is located. Simply walk outside to Diego’s Tacos and catch a taxi there. Or take a shuttle bus in front of the airport. Before you know it, you’ll be checking in, meeting your instructors, and getting ready to explore Cozumel’s famous reefs.
Option 2: Fly into Cancun and Take the Ferry
If you can’t find a direct flight to Cozumel or you’re looking for more affordable airfare, flying into Cancun International Airport (CUN) is an excellent alternative.
Step 1: Travel to Playa del Carmen
From Cancun Airport, you can reach Playa del Carmen by:
ADO bus - cheapest option: 200 to 270 mxn pesos (1:20 hour travel time - depending on traffic)
Taxi - expensive! 2000 to 3000 mxn pesos (40min- 1hour travel time - depending on traffic)
Private shuttle
Rental car (least favorite option since you will need to take the car ferry to get your car on Cozumel)
Step 2: Take the Ferry to Cozumel
From Playa del Carmen, passenger ferries run throughout the day to Cozumel. The crossing takes approximately 40–45 minutes and arrives in downtown San Miguel, just minutes from Cozumel Dive School.
Many travelers simply purchase the next available ferry ticket upon arrival, making the journey flexible even if flights are delayed.
There are three passenger ferry companies that operate between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel: Ultramar, Winjet, and Xailing by Xcaret. All three depart from the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal and arrive at the ferry pier in downtown San Miguel, Cozumel. The crossing takes approximately 40–45 minutes, depending on weather and sea conditions.
For most visitors coming to Cozumel Dive School, don’t worry too much about choosing a specific ferry company. Since all three operators run throughout the day, the easiest strategy is often to buy a one-way ticket for the next ferry that’s departing. This gives you flexibility if your flight or shuttle from Cancun is delayed and minimizes your waiting time.
https://winjet.mx - last ferry 10PM - 312 mxn pesos
https://ultramarferry.com/en - last ferry at 9PM - 320 mxn pesos
https://www.xcaret.com/en - last ferry 9:30 - 285 mxn pesos
The ferries all arrive in downtown San Miguel, where taxis are readily available. From there, you’re just a short ride away from Cozumel Dive School and your underwater adventure. If you don’t have too much luggage, you could even walk to the school, since it’s only a 12 minute walk.

Should You Bring Your Dive Gear?
You’re welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer diving with familiar gear. Many experienced divers travel with their mask, regulator, BCD, wetsuit, or fins.
However, there’s no need to pack everything if you don’t want to. At Cozumel Dive School, rental equipment is included at no additional cost for our divers, so you can travel lighter and still enjoy high-quality gear. The only item not included when booking fun dives, is a dive computer, which we recommend bringing if you own one or arranging to rent separately (10$ a day). For courses, a computer in included.
For many travelers, this means less luggage, fewer baggage fees, and a much easier trip.
Do You Need a Rental Car?
