Step 1: Discover Scuba Diving (optional)

Never been scuba diving before? Discover Scuba Diving is the perfect introduction to the underwater world. This experience lets you try scuba diving under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional—no certification required.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to experience scuba diving for the first time before committing to a full certification course.

Minimum age: 10 years

Prerequisites

• Good general health

• Comfortable in the water

• No previous scuba diving experience required

What you’ll do

• Learn the basic principles of scuba diving and safety.

• Become familiar with your scuba equipment.

• Practice essential diving skills during a confined water (pool) session.

• Enjoy a supervised shore dive from the beach, where you’ll experience the incredible underwater world of Cozumel.

The entire experience lasts approximately 4 hours, giving you plenty of time to build confidence before your first open water dive.

Step 2: PADI Open Water Diver

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba certification and your gateway to exploring the underwater world. Once certified, you’ll be qualified to dive with another certified diver anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18 metres (60 feet).

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to become a certified scuba diver and begin a lifetime of underwater adventures.

Minimum age

• 10 years (Junior Open Water Diver)

• 15 years (Open Water Diver)

Prerequisites

• Be able to swim.

• Float or tread water for 10 minutes.

• Complete the required medical questionnaire.

Course includes

• PADI eLearning or classroom knowledge development.

• Confined water (pool) training to master essential scuba skills.

• Four open water training dives, including two shore dives and two boat dives, allowing you to experience both of Cozumel’s exceptional diving environments.

• PADI Open Water Diver certification upon successful completion.

Most students complete the course over 3 to 4 days, combining theory, pool sessions, and open water training in Cozumel’s warm, crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

Step 3: Open Water Referral (optional)

Started your PADI Open Water Diver course at home? Complete your certification in the warm, crystal-clear waters of Cozumel.

The PADI Referral program allows you to finish the open water training dives you’ve already begun with another PADI Dive Center or Resort. It’s a great way to complete your certification while enjoying some of the best diving in the Caribbean.

Who is it for?

Students who have completed part of their Open Water Diver course with another PADI Dive Center and have a valid PADI Referral.

Prerequisites

• Valid PADI Open Water Referral documentation.

• Confined water (pool) training completed, or partial course completion, depending on your referral.

Course includes

• Completion of your remaining open water training dives.

• Review of skills as needed to ensure you are comfortable and confident before certification.

• PADI Open Water Diver certification upon successful completion.

Step 4: PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

Ready to take your diving to the next level? The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to build your confidence, expand your skills, and introduce you to new underwater adventures. Through five Adventure Dives, you’ll gain valuable experience while exploring some of Cozumel’s most spectacular dive sites.

Who is it for?

Certified PADI Open Water Divers (or qualifying certification from another training organization) who want to improve their diving skills and explore new types of diving.

Prerequisites

• PADI Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent)

• Minimum age: 12 years (Junior Advanced Open Water Diver)

Course includes

• Five Adventure Dives.

• Two required dives:

  • Deep Dive

  • Underwater Navigation Dive

• Three additional Adventure Dives selected based on the package you choose.

Upon successful completion, you’ll be certified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 metres (100 feet).

Choose the package that suits your adventure

At Cozumel Dive School, we offer several Advanced Open Water packages, allowing you to customize your experience based on your interests and the type of diving you’d like to do.

Packages may include:

• A combination of boat dives and shore dives.

• The PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) Specialty, allowing you to safely extend your no-decompression limits on many dives.

• The Shark & Ray Specialist Diver program for those interested in learning more about these incredible marine animals.

• Our ultimate package, which includes two unforgettable cenote dives in Playa del Carmen, giving you the opportunity to experience the crystal-clear freshwater caverns of Mexico’s Riviera Maya in addition to Cozumel’s famous reefs.

Duration: Typically 2–3 days, depending on the package selected.

Price: USD $440–$615, depending on the package you choose, the number of boat and shore dives included, and any additional specialty certifications or cenote dives.

Step 5: Emergency First Response (EFR)

Although not technically part of the recreational ladder, Emergency First Response is required before becoming a Rescue Diver.

Who is it for?

Everyone—including non-divers.

Prerequisites

• None

Topics include

• CPR

• Primary Care

• Secondary Care

• AED awareness

• Emergency response

Price: USD $169, however there is a package price that is discounted if you book it together with the rescue course.

Step 6: Rescue Diver

Many divers describe Rescue Diver as the most rewarding recreational course they ever take.

Instead of focusing only on yourself, you’ll learn to prevent problems, recognise stress in divers, and respond to emergencies.

Who is it for?

Divers ready to become safer and more confident dive buddies. There is no prerequisite number of dives, however you will need to be comfortable in the water and fit enough to deal with stressful (underwater) situations.

Prerequisites

• Advanced Open Water (or qualifying certification)

• Emergency First Response (within the last 24 months)

Minimum age: 12 years

Price: USD $440 (if you already have a EFR certification within the last 24 months.

Price for EFR + Rescue: $585.

Specialty Diver Courses

Once you’ve mastered the basics, specialty courses allow you to focus on your favourite type of diving.

This is the highest non-professional recreational rating in PADI.

Fewer than 2% of recreational divers ever achieve this prestigious certification.

Prerequisites

• Rescue Diver

• Five PADI Specialty certifications

• Minimum 50 logged dives

There is no separate course—once you meet the requirements, you simply apply for the rating.

Step 7: Divemaster

Divemaster is your first professional PADI certification.

As a Divemaster, you’ll assist instructors, supervise certified divers, guide dive trips, and begin working in the dive industry.

Who is it for?

Divers who want to turn their passion into a career.

Prerequisites

• Rescue Diver

• Emergency First Response (within 24 months)

• Minimum 40 logged dives to begin

• 60 logged dives to earn certification

• Medical statement signed by a physician

Minimum age: 18 years

Duration: Approximately 4 weeks

Step 8: Instructor Development Course (IDC)

The Instructor Development Course is where passionate Divemasters become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors.

The IDC combines:

• Assistant Instructor (AI)

• Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)

You’ll learn:

• Teaching presentations

• Dive theory

• Standards and procedures

• Confined water teaching

• Open water teaching

• Risk management

• Student evaluation

• Professional teaching techniques

After successfully completing the IDC, candidates attend the PADI Instructor Examination (IE).

Prerequisites

• Certified PADI Divemaster (or qualifying leadership certification)

• At least 60 logged dives to begin IDC

• 100 logged dives before attending the Instructor Examination

• Emergency First Response Instructor (or completed during IDC)

• Medical examination

• Minimum age 18
