Planning a dive trip to Cozumel? One of the questions we hear most often at Cozumel Dive School is:

“Where should I stay?”

The good news is that you don’t need an expensive beachfront resort to enjoy world-class diving. In fact, many experienced divers prefer staying in downtown San Miguel (Centro), where you’ll find affordable hotels, great Airbnb options, excellent restaurants, and easy access to everything you need.

Why Stay in Downtown Cozumel?

While the south hotel zone is known for its large resorts, staying in the center of Cozumel offers several advantages—especially if diving is the main reason for your trip.

1. Walk to Your Dive Shop

One of the biggest benefits of staying near Cozumel Dive School is convenience.

Instead of waking up extra early to arrange taxis or drive across the island, you can simply enjoy breakfast, walk to the dive school, and start your day relaxed.

Even better, we take care of the transportation once you arrive at the dive school. Transportation from Cozumel Dive School to the marina or shore diving location—and back to the dive school after your dives—is included in the price of your diving. You don’t need to worry about finding the correct marina, arranging taxis, or navigating unfamiliar roads. Simply meet us at the dive school, and we’ll handle the rest.

After your dives, you’ll be back in downtown Cozumel, ready to enjoy lunch, explore the town, or relax before your next underwater adventure.

2. Save Money for What Matters

Accommodation in downtown Cozumel is often significantly more affordable than beachfront resorts. That means you can spend your budget on what really matters:

  • More dives

  • Specialty courses

  • Great local restaurants

  • Sunset drinks by the waterfront

  • Souvenirs and island adventures

Many budget hotels and vacation rentals offer excellent value with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, kitchens, and even small pools.

Airbnb Tips for Divers

Airbnb can be an excellent option, especially for stays of a week or longer.

When searching, look for properties that offer:

  • Walking distance to downtown (5–15 minutes)

  • Air conditioning

  • Reliable Wi-Fi

  • A full kitchen

  • Outdoor space or balcony to dry towels and swimsuits

  • Self check-in if arriving late

  • Washing machine if you’re staying for several days

Before booking, check the map instead of relying only on the listing title. If you’re within downtown San Miguel, you’ll likely be able to walk almost everywhere.

The Best Part About Staying in Centro

When you’re not diving, downtown Cozumel has a relaxed local atmosphere that’s hard to beat.

Within a few minutes’ walk you’ll find:

  • Authentic Mexican restaurants

  • Coffee shops

  • Supermarkets

  • Pharmacies

  • Banks and ATMs

  • Ice cream shops

  • The waterfront promenade (Malecón)

  • Local markets and souvenir stores

In the evenings, you can stroll along the ocean, enjoy live music, or have dinner without worrying about transportation.

Do You Need to Rent a Car?

For most divers, the answer is no.

If you’re staying downtown and diving with us, everything is easy. Walk to Cozumel Dive School each morning, and we’ll provide transportation to the marina or beach and back to the dive school after your dives. For occasional trips to beach clubs or the east side of the island, taxis are inexpensive and readily available.

Skipping a rental car means saving money on parking, fuel, and rental fees—leaving more of your budget for what you came to Cozumel to do: dive.

Our Recommendation

If your goal is to experience the incredible reefs of Cozumel while keeping your trip affordable, staying in downtown San Miguel is one of the smartest choices you can make.

You’ll save money, enjoy authentic island life, be surrounded by fantastic restaurants and cafés, and be just a short walk from Cozumel Dive School. From there, we’ll take care of getting you to the marina or shore diving site, so your dive days are simple, stress-free, and focused on enjoying the underwater world.
